History Page

Oklahoma, one of the youngest states in the nation, admitted to the Union in 1907, was populated by Indians removed from the southeast in the 1880's and land-hungry farmers in the land runs and lotteries of the 1890's.  Most of these people were advocates of the principles of the Southern Democrat Party, which dominated Okahoma politics for sixty years.

A Republican success during this time occurred in the wake of the women's suffrage when, in 1920, Alice M. Robertson became the only Oklahoma woman elected to Congress.  Congresswoman Robertson subsequently founded the first oklahoma Republican Women's Club in Oklahoma City in 1921.  There were few successes during the next 20 years, but the faithful few worked hard, served well, and grew with Oklahoma.  In 1941, the Republican Women's Clubs in Oklahoma were federated.

With the help of the OFRW grassroots efforts, Republicans gained the majority in the Okalhoma HOuse of Representatives fort he first time since 1921 --- when they held the majority for only 2 years.  State Chairman, Gary Jones, has praised the women of the OFRW for their continued hard work and support of the Republican Party.

After helping Mike Schultz win a never-before-Republican-held Senate seat in Southwest Oklahoma, with a great deal of help from the Custer County RW and the Southwest Okla. RW, as well as Republican Women from all over the state, the 2008 election saw the Republican Party gain a majority in the Oklahoma Senate for the first time in Oklahoma history.  So now, Republicans hold majorities in both Houses.  In the same election, Dana Murphy, of the Edmond RW, ousted an incumbent Democrat to win a seat on the Corporation Commission.  Congresswoman, Mary Fallin, 5th District, and a member of Tri-City RW, is actively campaigning for Governor in the 2010 elections.

In that same election of 2008, Oklahoma was the only state in the nation to carry all of their 77 counties for the McCain/Palin ticket.  This, in a state which has 300,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans.

The Republican Women of Oklahoma have really made a difference!!!
